Regular Council Meeting

Mayor Millirons called the regular meeting of the Morrow City Council to order at 7:31 p.m.  The meeting took place in the Council Chambers of the Morrow Municipal Complex, 1500 Morrow Road, Morrow, GA 30260.  Everyone stood for the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.  Councilman Sorrow gave the invocation.

 

APPROVAL OF MINUTES:        Work Session           -  January 25, 2004         

                                                    Regular Meeting  -  January 25, 2004

 

Councilman Sorrow made the motion to approve the minutes as written, seconded by Mayor Pro Tem Slaton.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

PRESENTATIONS:

 

Item 1.  Award given to Louis Bonora, former Manager of the Morrow Wal-Mart

             Also in attendance Steve Ray, current Co-Manager of Morrow Wal-Mart

 

Mr. Bonora was unable to attend.  The “Key to the City” will be presented to him at a later date.    

 

Item 2.  Presentation by Police Chief Charlie Sewell to the 2004 Morrow Police

              Department Employee of the Year and 2004 Law Enforcement Citizen of

              the Year

 

Jack Kirksey was given the Law Enforcement Citizen of the Year award by Chief Sewell.  Mr. Kirksey is a graduate of the City’s Citizen Police Academy and also the Citizen Corps (formerly Community Emergency Response Team).  He began volunteering for the Police Department after his retirement.  Chief Sewell gave an extensive list of tasks and volunteer duties that Mr. Kirksey had unselfishly carried out.  He and also Charlie Slater have partnered on a great number of these.

 

Mr. Kirksey was most thankful for the award and expressed his great love of the City of Morrow

 

In a span of four years Detective Mosely was given five Employee of the Month awards.  Tonight she was presented the Police Department Employee of the Year award by Chief Sewell.   He praised her upbeat attitude and many skills and accomplishments.

 

Detective Mosely said she enjoys her job with the City and looks forward to being with the City for many years to come. 

 

ANNOUNCEMENT:

 

Due to no agenda items, the Planning and Zoning Board Meeting of

February 15 has been cancelled.  The next scheduled meeting is March 15

at 7:30.

                           

NEW BUSINESS:

 

Item 1:   Request for donation to help with the “March into Spring” Celebration

              on March 19 at Reynolds Memorial Nature Preserve by Stephanie Lucas,

              Director

 

A motion was made by Councilman Huie to donate $1,000, seconded by Councilman LaPorte.  The affirmative vote was unanimous.

 

Item 2:   Request for approval for consulting services for the pedestrian pathway        

 

Councilman Huie made a motion to pay Jordan, Jones & Goulding a fee of $203,700 for the consulting services for Phase I of the Jester’s Creek Pedestrian Pathway System, seconded by Councilman Slaton.  The vote to approve was unanimous. 

 

Item 3:   To declare a 1994 Ford Crown Victoria (VIN 2FALP71W0SX121352) as

               surplus property and authorize Acting Fire Chief Broome or his designated

               representative to dispose of the property in keeping with applicable laws

 

Councilman  LaPorte made a motion to accept the declaration, seconded by Councilman Slaton.  The affirmative vote was unanimous.

 

Item 4:   Report by John Lampl on the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety

               Grant

 

The second radar trailer purchased with the $16,000 grant funds from the Governor’s Office was received by the Police Department this past week.

Jack Kirksey will demonstrate different features of the trailer after the council meeting tonight.

Mayor and Council-

Mayor Pro Tem Slaton commented on the great turnout at the Community Roundtable held at the Tourist Center before the council meeting.  He welcomed Mr. and Mrs. Wilson of Graceland Circle to the council meeting which also had a fine attendance.

 

ADJOURNMENT:
